A closer look at Ulric 3.0

When we first went to China for PVC we told you if we decided to do characters that had been already released in prototype form we would make some changes to make the PVC unique. Well Ulric Wolfrom is an extreme example of this.

Ulric is near and dear to my heart, he was the first character I ever created.

His sculpt however in the grand scheme of things left a lot to be desired, simply because we did him first and had no idea how far we could push the talents of Simon or the tooling/cleanup powers of Marty and True Cast.

So because of that ,when lined up with most of the other characters he is less cartoony, less detailed and sort of plain. So given the events of the comic books we had a chance to redo him.

You will notice a few changes

  • New head sculpt, more character and more in line with characters like Sheldon Sabre in terms of expression
  • New pose, designed to give the figure more “playability”
  • Comic book changes, he now wears a glove on his injured hand
  • New outfit, long pants and Wolf pullover

At C2E2 we showed off the figure itself, now this is just a a copy of the original print. As we speak True Cast Studio is cleaning it up and preparing it to send to China for PVC molding.

Once of the things we wanted to expand on was to allow for some moves, which is one of the reasons for his new stance

We are quite pleased with the work Simon has done to breath some new life into my favorite Wolf, look for Ulric Wolfrom PVC later this year as part of our next set of PVC releases!

Sweet! I’m really excited to get more of these guys in the PVC format. I’m loving the symbol on his chest!

    Very nice.

I’m curious to know who will join Ulric in the next PVC release(s).

One character you guys have already seen will be changed up slightly and the reason why will be clear when they are seen. The other has never been seen before in terms of figure (you have seen the concept art)

Sweet! I look forward to the next PVC releases.

I am looking forward to them as well, we are “hoping” to get everything done and in place for a Fall release. But with these things there is never a set time, there are a lot of factors that have to be just right to get it done.

I strongly disagree with you Mark.

I don’t think your figures look plain. I like their look.

QUESTION:So with Ulric 3.0’s look can we expect more details for other characters? More characters with new looks? Characters with new positions? Or is Ulric 3.0’s look just for him?

    • Mark says:

I don’t think all my figures look plain either, just the 1st version of Ulric lol

He was sculpted and created in December of 2012, Goliath for example was done in Feb 2013 and there is clearly a design difference in terms of detail, personality, and depth to the figure (ability to do moves, etc). Even just looking at Ulric 1.0 and 3.0 you can see the progression of the sculpt.

We are always trying to do new positions, if you look at the Lapin Loco sculpts they are designed to pull off a tag team move. The problem with PVC is that due to the cost and limitations of steel molding sometimes the most unique figures in terms of size and pose cannot be made in PVC without some great expense (Goliath falls into this category).

As for new looks, this is something we have been playing around with for some time. Sheldon Sabre has 2 sculpts (robed and unrobed), Yvonne Wolfrom has 2 sculpts. When you guys see the next 2 PVC figures we will touch some more on our idea that they are changed up from their previous versions. I can tell you one figure in the next series you guys have seen already, the other is completely new and has never been shown 😉

As you know I’m a huge fan of Ulric. Besides reminding me so much of the M.U.S.C.L.E.S. I loved as a kid, he was what made me love your MWOTR the second I first saw it. As much as I love the original, this new one looks great!
